Marrakesh, MoroccoMarrakesh is the most amazing place in the world. I know this is a bold claim but I can’t imagine being as swept away with a place as I was with Marrakesh. It’s a bustling place, full of energy and with so much to dazzle the senses and all seems to centre on the Djemaa el-Fna, literally the “square of the dead”, in the middle of the medina. Possibly the most inappropriately named place imaginable, during the day the square plays host to snake charmers, sword swallowers and acrobats. The moment the sun disappears behind the rooftops, they are replaced by dozens of huge barbeques and the sky is filled with smoke. Wandering around these stalls sampling soups, kebabs and other Moroccan delicacies is sheer heaven. Surrounding the square is a labyrinth of winding streets filled with stalls selling everything from herbs to cows hooves, replica football shirts to traditional dress all desperate to haggle your dirhams out of your pockets. It’s very much in-yer-face and can be quite daunting but, for me, is the most fascinating and wonderful place I’ve ever been. Matthew Taylor.
