AMERICAN PSYCHO
This book is like nothing I have ever read before.
Patrick Bateman may torture, murder and ridicule his victims but you can't fail not to like him. Growing up in the ways of Bateman, were everything seems so ridiculous and materialistic, quickly sends him over the edge and into extreme chaos that he simply cannot handle.
Bateman and his associates wear the same suits, shirts, ties and have identical haircuts - so much so that no one knows who's really who. All the characters are egotistical, self-centred modernists. It's not about anything else for these people other than who has the best clothes, who can get reservations at the best restaurants and who's handling the biggest clients at their respective multi-million dollar companies. Spending hundreds of dollars each days in fancy, overpriced restaurants is nothing to Bateman and his social elite acquaintances - money is all they have in life - happiness however, that's a different thing entirely.
Our main character will even take prescribed and illegal drugs to help him cope with his life, a life which most of us would probably think is fabulous, having an expensive apartment in New York's upper west side and enjoying the best of everything possible in life. In truth, Bateman is unhappy because no one really cares for him. Not his fiancée, friends or even his own parents probably.
There are doubts that he doesn't really kill anyone at all and that the murders are all concocted in his mind in order to make his life better and more interesting. There is a divide of fans who think this and others who think not - all I will say is that the hints are there.
As the book progresses, Bateman takes his torture to new heights, as he dwells further out of his mind, which are described in minute detail, which can be disturbing for some. I'd read at least three chapters of this book before you decide you do or don't like it. There are mixed reviews about it but it can take time to really get into it's quirks.
