Is it a risk?Rooney is an amazing talent, and a fully fit Wayne Rooney would light up the world cup with his talents, but a half fit Wayne Rooney would be bad for the side as we could end up carrying him like we clearly did with Beckham and Owen Vs Brazil. I think its a mistake to even think about Rooney now, surely sven will learn from his mistakes of 4 years ago? We all talk about us being possible world champions, well to do that we need to have a great TEAM not just a great PLAYER, yes it helps, and yes we are a STRONGER side with Rooney but we are also a strong side without him. Look at the talented players we have.... Joe Cole, Lampard, Gerrard, Defoe, Wright-Phillips, Beckham, Owen, Crouch ... We can win this tournament, but one man won't win it for us, it'll take 11 hero's. It's a blow, but not a knockout blow. Thoughts?

to be quite honest I would gamble on wayne rooney, regardless of the fact he plays for mancs and used to play for everton.
its easy to go on about needing 11 heroes, working as a team, etc etc, the talent that this lad has makes a big difference to any team he plays in., his talent simply cannot be replaced.
I honestly beleive that with the current squad of players, IF fully fit we would have a great chance of winning the world cup, especially with it being held on our own continent, where weather conditions wont effect as much as it might.
as for people talking about other mettarsal breaks, or other similar big players who have been out of action before a big tournament, it really has nothing to do with it, this injury should be looked at in isolation, if there is a chance he can get fit for midway through the tournamanet and not risk making his injury worse he should go.
there are ALWAYS players who go to world cups who dont figure, I woudl rather this year rooney be one of them who might not figure just incase he CAN, lets not waste a space on some no mark who isnt international standard.

so do you believe Sven was right to gamble against Brazil by playing Owen & Beckham when they weren't fit?
They were our "Rooneys" at the time and that plan failed badly, it cost us the world cup in my opinion.

I suppose the new question should be "Would you gamble on Theo Walcott"
an outrageous selection, a real kick in the teeth for the lads who have played in the premiership all season. How can you go from a reserve team player to the biggest stage of them all at the world cup?
A MASSIVE gamble, i am excited by it though! ;D

The thing that gets me is how can Wenger come out and say that the lad is ready for the world cup when he won't risk him in the premiership or the champions league? I reckon he's laughing his willy off at us!
